Industries & Applications

One mineral, many industrial applications.

Calcium carbonate is used across a wide range of formulations, but its role, the grade that suits it and the addition rate all depend on the system it goes into. The grades shown below are starting points for discussion — final selection should be confirmed against your own specification and trials.

Paint & Coatings

Extender pigment

Calcium carbonate is used in many paint and coating formulations as an extender — helping control body and rheology, adjust the gloss level, and improve the cost of the formulation. Suitability and addition rate depend on the system and the finish required.

  • Helps control body, rheology and gloss level
  • 97% brightness supports clean, bright shades
  • Fine uncoated grades are the usual starting point

Plastics

PE / PP filler

A mineral filler used in many polyethylene and polypropylene applications — film, injection moulding and extrusion. Grade selection and addition rate depend on the requirements of the product, and coated grades are generally chosen where dispersion in the polymer matters.

  • Mineral filler for PE and PP processing
  • Stearic Acid coated grades assist dispersion in the polymer
  • Grade and addition rate set by the product requirements

Filler Masterbatch

Filler base

Calcium carbonate is the mineral base of filler masterbatch, and dispersion governs how the masterbatch performs — so coated grades are normally selected. The coating level and the median particle size are chosen against the masterbatch specification and the end film or moulded part.

  • Coating level measured on each grade, not a nominal figure
  • Fine medians (from 1.52 µm) available for film-grade masterbatch
  • Grade and loading reviewed against the masterbatch spec

PVC Pipes & Profiles

Coated for processing

A mineral filler used in many rigid PVC pipe and profile formulations. Coated grades are commonly selected to assist dispersion and processing behaviour; grade and addition rate depend on the formulation and the properties being targeted.

  • Coated grades are commonly used in rigid PVC formulations
  • Grades from 5 to 20 µm as starting points for trial
  • Low moisture (0.02%) supports stable extrusion

PVC Compound

Coated for dispersion

Used as a mineral filler in rigid and flexible PVC compound, whether you supply dry blend or pelletised material. The Stearic Acid treatment supports dispersion through high-speed mixing, and the coating level is measured on every grade rather than estimated. Grade and addition rate depend on the compound specification.

  • Coating level measured by thermal analysis — 0.75% to 1.47% depending on grade
  • Low moisture (0.02%) for dry blend and pelletising
  • Six top cuts from 5 to 20 µm to trial against your compound

Rubber

Mineral filler

A mineral filler used in rubber compounds to add body and support processing, depending on the formulation. It is not a direct substitute for carbon black or silica — its role, the grade and the loading are set by the compound and the properties required.

  • Adds body and supports processing, depending on formulation
  • Coated grades assist dispersion in the elastomer
  • Coarser grades are often used in high-volume goods

Paper

Filler & coating material

Calcium carbonate is used as a filler and as a coating material for some grades of paper and board, depending on the process and the furnish. High brightness supports sheet whiteness; suitability and addition rate follow the manufacturing requirements.

  • Filler and coating material for selected paper and board grades
  • 97% brightness supports sheet whiteness
  • Consistent PSD supports predictable running

Dry Mortar & Building Materials

Mortars & renders

Used in putties, renders, dry mortars, tile adhesives and similar mixes, where it contributes body and helps control the cost of the formulation. Grade and proportion depend on the mix design and the finish required.

  • For putties, renders, dry mortars and tile adhesives
  • Coarser grades commonly used for body and workability
  • Bulk and jumbo bag supply available

Adhesives

Viscosity & body

In adhesive systems, calcium carbonate helps control viscosity and body. Coated or uncoated is selected according to the chemistry of the system, and the grade and loading are confirmed on the formulation itself.

  • Helps control viscosity and body
  • Coated or uncoated selected by system chemistry
  • Low moisture suits many reactive systems

Sealants

Viscosity & body

In sealant compounds, calcium carbonate helps control viscosity and body. Fine grades are the usual starting point, with coated or uncoated selected according to the system; grade and loading are confirmed on the formulation.

  • Helps control viscosity and body in the compound
  • Fine grades are typically used for smooth application
  • Coated options for moisture-sensitive systems

Cable Insulation & Sheathing Compounds

PVC-based compounds

Calcium carbonate is used in some cable insulation and sheathing compounds, particularly PVC-based formulations. It is not used across all cable types — suitability, grade and addition rate depend on the compound and the specification it has to meet.

  • Used in some PVC-based insulation and sheathing compounds
  • Coated grades assist dispersion at higher loadings
  • Suitability confirmed against the cable specification

Ceramics

Calcium source

A source of calcium in some ceramic bodies, glazes and engobes, supplying calcium oxide after firing. Low iron supports a clean fired colour. Suitability, grade and addition rate should be confirmed by firing trials.

  • Calcium source for selected bodies, glazes and engobes
  • Low iron supports a clean fired colour
  • Confirm suitability and addition rate by firing trials

Agricultural Liming

Acidic soils

Ground limestone is used to correct acidic soils. Whether liming is needed, the specification required and the application rate should all be determined from soil analysis and local agronomic guidance.

  • For acidic soils, based on soil analysis
  • Specification and application rate set for each field
  • Bulk and bagged supply options
